Mindful Meditation

There’s more to life than just living on the surface of science and technology.

Mindful Meditation

And yet the more we find our material needs met the more we seem to forget about who we are beneath that surface.

The indoctrinated materialist would argue that there is no reality other than what can be seen and measured, but even in their private universe at some point in their life, they are confronted with their own deeper presence – though fleeting as it may be from a lack of application.

Having a sense of a “deeper” presence or self is directly the result of humans having to prioritise their attention. Once upon a time this depth of self-recognition wasn’t so deep and was more an everyday aspect of life. But it goes back a long way when life was simpler with far less exploitation. Nowadays allowing ourselves to think about “who we are” at a deep level, is reserved for those who either have the time or who would acknowledge the wisdom of an inner teacher.

To be able to sit quietly and think deeply is a big part of what meditation brings to life. The material world would make numbers of each of us if we allowed. It would prioritise our quality time and have us work our lives away for a cause we may not even agree with. But we would do it because we didn’t have the time to think deeply enough to question the validity of such an existence. We have become compulsive doers in life – thinking deeply and being laterally creative is not encouraged.

Why are we getting so stressed? Because we know something is adrift and we cant quite put our finger on what it is . . .

It is essential to being human that we exercise our mental capacities in as much as spending time everyday in a state of deep thought. Being able to access this level of thought requires a person to relax totally with eyes closed such as in the practice of meditation – which incidentally is also highly beneficial to human health and wellbeing. The overall benefits are far-reaching, but most of all, we get to spend time with our thoughts and ourselves and this brings a more inclusive perspective to life.

The regular practice of meditative deep thinking has a huge problem solving potential in that it taps into our innate creativity. Often our most chronic problems are the result of not having the time to address what is actually going on for us. This coerces us to keep trying the same approach and work harder at it (the definition of insanity anyone?). Deeper thinking allows us the luxury of lateral ideas and processes and with this comes stress relief, resolution and success. It’s really about working smart, not hard.

We are all capable of success when it comes to personal psychology and yet we have made it a career for others. The truth is, no one knows us better than we ourselves do, and while there are certain pitfalls in self-analysis, a layman’s awareness coupled with regular deep thought meditations will safely and surely get us to where we want to be.

Having spent the last five years assisting people to practice meditation, I have come to the conclusion that self-help is the best help. That is not to say that we are each an island, but that a relationship, a team, a group or any organisation works better when each of its contributors has a strong sense of their own self determination.

Meditating and spending time in deep thought is a healthy option. To improve the quality of our individual lives in this way contributes to a better world. By harnessing our natural sense of autonomy we begin to change the structure of organisation all the way to the top. If human civilisation is to move away from governance that demands service from its people rather than serving its people, then perhaps being in charge of our lives at a personal level is a most critical requirement.
